I'm researching how small manufacturers actually use (or don't use) SBA loans.
If you're a shop owner who's tried — or given up on — an SBA loan, I'd like to talk. If you work with shop owners in that space, I'd like to talk to you too.
What I'm trying to learn
I'm curious about the process of applying for SBA loans and how machine shop owners think about financing. My background is in manufacturing software, and the experience led me to wonder how access to capital can be more effective than off-the-shelf software for helping shops grow. I want to learn about how owners weigh SBA financing against alternatives, and why some owners don't consider it.
Who's asking
I spent four years (2018–2022) selling production planning software to manufacturers. I write about it at Medians of Production. More about me at /team.
I'm not currently selling a product, and I haven't run a shop myself, which is exactly why I want to hear from people who have.
Who I'd like to hear from
I'm talking to people who are involved with the process of getting money from the SBA, primarily shop owners in the $1m-$15m range who have either applied for it or decided not to. I'm interested primarily in the 504 and 7(a) programs. I'm also interested in speaking with people who assist with the process and have a perspective on it: SCORE mentors, accountant, or IDA staff.
What you get in return
Nothing commercial. I'm doing research out of curiosity and will thank you for your time and attention. Just 25 minutes by phone or video. If you want to stay in touch as I learn more, I'd be glad to, but there's no demo follow-up attached.
Know a shop owner I should talk to?
If you work with manufacturers and you can think of someone whose perspective would be valuable, I'd really appreciate a forward.
